DOES MODERN EDUCATION HAVE TO BE THIS WAY?

After eighteen years as either teacher or principal, I have grown frustrated with the modern factory-school approach to education. I am tired of telling exasperated and unhappy students that I fully understand their feelings, but “this is something we just all have to go through.” Why? Why does education have to be this way? How can something so exciting as learning become such a miserable experience for so many students? And how is it that students in our modern schools do not seem to accomplish nearly as much as students in earlier American history? Could there be a better way?
